The Beginning
Gary began his career as a professional darts player by competing in the British Darts Organization. In 2001, he marked his first big victory by defeating John Walton at the Welsh Open.
In 2003, Anderson was already in the semi-finals of the BDO World Darts Championship. In 2007 and 2008, the player reached the World Championship but was defeated before he managed to move to the finals.
However, 2007 was also a lucky year for Andreson who won the International Darts League, as well as the World Darts Trophy. Then, this striking success was followed by another one – winning the BDO British Open. The same year, he also won the Zuiderduin Masters. These achievements prompted him to be named the number one player of the WDF in 2009. This success was followed by his first televised appearance at the Premier League Dart meeting held in Cardiff.
A Series of Awards
In 2008, Anderson had another glorious and prolific year. He won the BDO International Grand Prix title, Welsh Open, the Dutch Pentathlon, and German Open. In early 2009, the famous player decided to join the PDC.
In 2010, Andrson took part in the PDC World Championship, but was eliminated in the second round by Ronnie Baxter. The same year, he managed to reach for the first time the PDC major final of the UP Open. He defeated many renowned players such as Michael van Gerwen before being eliminated by Phil Taylor in the finals. In 2010, Anderson also qualified as the sixth seed in the Grand slam of Darts.
2011 saw Gary qualifying for the World Championship as the 11th seed. This event also marked his highest average in the World Championship – 108.39. He was defeated by Adrian Lewis in the finals, however, this match brought him a place in 2011’s Premier League where he won in the semi-finals against Van Barneveld. Then, in a repeat of the World Championship, he managed to beat Adrian Lewis and mark his first major victory in the UK. In 2011, Anderson also won four Players Championships.
In 2012, Gary had his first televised nine-dart finish at the UK Open, against Davely Dodds. The same year, he won Irish Masters and finished second in group F in the Grands Slam of Darts.
In 2013, Anderson qualified for the Premier League but was eliminated by James Wade. The same year, he also played in the Premier League and the UK Open, and managed to reach the major quarter-final at the Players Championship Finals.
In 2014, Anderson won the German Darts Championship and the Players Championship. He was also close to winning the World Matchplay against Phil Taylor in a stunning match that saw Taylor as the winner. 2014 season ended for Anderson as the top player in the Pro Tour Order of Merit and number one seed player of the Players Championship Finals.
In 2015, Anderson won his first World Championship by defeating Phil Taylor 7-6 and he was crowned as the PDC Player of the Year. The same year, he won the PDC Players Championship. This victory was followed by a second Premier League title.
2016 was another outstanding year for the Flying Scotsman who managed to win once again the World Championship by beating Adrian Lewis 7-5. The same year, he was the fourth player in the Premier League and managed to win the Auckland Darts Masters, the Dubai Masters, and the Tokyo Darts Masters.
In 2018, Anderson won his 4th UK Open Qualifier and reached the finals where he defeated Corey Cadby. The same year, he won his third Players Championship and the US Darts Masters. In 2019, he also played in the longest match of the World Matchplay and defeated Suljović 21–19.
