Slim vs Standard Flights. What Makes the Difference?

Posted in: How to play

If you’re barely getting used to the game of darts, I’m sure you’ve got plenty of questions when it comes to the wide array of different accessories you can use. Darts flights are some of the most common darts accessories you need in order to play this game, and they come in so many different shapes and sizes

If you’re a bit confused about their diversity, worry not. This short guide will teach you the main differences between slim vs. standard flights, which are the 2 main types of darts flights.

How do these flights work?

Essentially, the main difference between slim and standard flights is how they perform while helping the dart move through the air.

Small and slim flights will enable darts to move through the air quicker, due to their reduced shape. Therefore, these flights can help you gain more speed and make your darts land in the dartboard faster. However, because their main advantage is speed and they have the capacity to reduce drag, small and slim flights are more susceptible to angle variations.

In other words, if you don’t throw with confidence and you’re not skilled enough yet to have a consistent trajectory, these flights can work against you because even the slightest deviation and insecure movement can determine darts fitted with this type of flights to fly astray.

Bigger and thicker flights, which are standard flights, on the other hand, will enable darts to fly slowly through the air. Although they will land in the dartboard later, darts that are fitted with standard flight enjoy a more balanced flight trajectory.

These flights ensure more drag, which stabilizes the darts' flight path and makes them less sensitive to deviations and angle variations. If you’re barely at the beginning of your darts journey, these types of flights are more suitable for you because they help you gain more control

When to use each?

Slim flights are usually more suitable for darters who are more experienced and prefer harder and faster throws. These flights can help you avoid lobbing darts. Moreover, due to their size and weight, they are also compatible with similar darts elements that are slimmer and lightweight: short shafts and leigh darts.

If you play darts using an electronic dartboard and soft tip darts, you can also benefit from slim flights. Slim flights are more suitable for these darts that are less heavy than steel tip darts, and therefore require harder throws in order to reach the board.

Moreover, this type of flights can also help you avoid bounce outs and tight groupings that damage darts and prevent you from scoring.

Standard flights are the most popular and commonly used darts flights. These flights are more suitable for beginners or darters who generally use less force while throwing. Also, they are suitable for those who like to lob their darts. These flights keep darts aloft even if you don’t use a lot of force while throwing and enable them to reach the dartboard.

These flights are the best choice for steel tip darts that are heavier or for darts that have longer shafts. These shafts, combined with standard flights, will enable you to achieve a stable flight trajectory.

The bottom line:

To understand which dart flights are more suitable for your throwing style, you should experiment with both standard and slim flights. We recommend you start with standard ones if you’re a mere beginner and try slimmer flights as you start improving your skills. No matter what dart flights you choose to go for, don’t forget that you can find both options in our catalog.
