Darts is more than a pub game, it is an official sport. As such, it has its professional leagues, international tournaments, and top players. There are many darters who have made history with their incredible throws, accuracy, and style. It was hard to make a list as there are so many names to choose from. However, here are the best of the best.
Gary Anderson
Gary Anderson is the most famous Scottish darter of all time. He is also known as 'The Flying Scotsman'. For two consecutive years, in 2015 and 2016 respectively, he was the world's number one player as he won the PDC World Championship. Another one of his biggest achievements is having won the World Cup of Darts. He is also the number one player for the highest number of 180s scored in a match (22).
Adrian Lewis
Adrian Lewis, aka Jackpot, is a legend among professional darts players. He has been competing professionally for longer than many of us can remember. In 2011, he conquered the PDC World Championship for the first time. Moreover, he was also the first darts player to hit a nine-darter in a world final and secure a victory. Lewis has been a regular presence at all major PDC tournaments. Other awards he managed to grab include the PDC World Cup of Darts and the European Championship.
Michael van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen was very young when he first started out as a professional darts player. By many, he was considered the ‘darts prodigy’, and continuously managed to showcase his talent and back this belief with solid evidence. After only 4 years since his debut, he managed to win the World Masters in a televised match, with an outstanding in-dart finish. He is also the winner of three PDC World Championship titles. Other trophies on this champion's list include the UK Open, World Matchplays, and five World Grand Prix, among others.
Dennis Priestley
Priestly is another big player with an incredibly long history of professional competing. He first became a BDO world champion back in 1991, a year when some of its subsequent rivals weren't even born. In 1994, he became the PDC world champion.
Alongside his long-time rival, Phi Tailor, and Raymond van Barneveld, Priestly is the only darter who managed to average 100 in World Championship finals.
Raymond van Barneveld
Speaking of the wolf, let's now focus on van Barneveld, one of the most successful darts players in the world if we judge by the number of trophies he won. He is one of the few players who managed to win the BDO World Championship several times, more precisely, four times. Moreover, in 2007, he also won the PDC World Championship. Other victories include Premier League trophies, UK Open titles, and a Grand Slam of Darts.
Phil Taylor
For many, Phil “the Power” Taylor is the greatest darts player of all times. His career spread over 3 decades during which he won a plethora of trophies. Officially, based on most darts statistics and tops, he is the most successful and prolific darts player in the world. The Power won a dazzling number of 16 World Championship trophies. He is also the happy owner of 6 Grand Slams, 6 Premier League titles, 11 World Grand Prix Crowns, and plenty more. Overall, this champion has conquered 85 major titles in his career and won 214 tournaments.
Eric Bristow
Bristow is also known as the ‘The Crafty Cockney’. Now retired, this player used to be the most prominent figure in professional darts during the 70s and 80s. He can also be considered one of the founding fathers of popular darts because he contributed to turning this game into a mainstream sport attraction for spectators. Bristow was the number one world player for three times in his life. He also marked 5 World Championship victories as the finalist and gathered 5 World Masters titles.
