What are the newest trends in darts

Posted in: Interesting stuff

The obsession for darts is not a secret and those who go crazy for this sport know the feeling. The only thing that can't be modified are the rules of the game.

This is why we developed a list with some of the newest trends in darts products. They are related to new techniques, products and designs.

First off, there are two things that are also related to the evolution of the game of darts (more about that in a future blog). We live in fast times and it was more than bound to happen that someone will think of something to bring the game of darts into more of a futuristic realm:

Here are some technical trends that are making the game of darts evolve:

  • Darts are getting longer - following the general consensus that standard length darts are uncomfortable for front-grippers and that longer points need less momentum for the throw, dart gear producers are adapting to the trend and designing longer pointed darts.

  • They're getting heavier - let’s face it, most of us play darts to relax. No one wants to go in there and sweat buckets for their throws so most of us have a more relaxed style of throwing, meaning we need a heavier dart for better accuracy.

  • There's a new kind of dart called "the dartgun" that shoots out of a gun barrel and embeds itself into the board, which is kind of cool but also kind of scary. I’m not gonna get  into it more than that, research at your own risk 😀

Some other trends that are on producers’ hot list, ours too, are related to new and improved materials that will take the game of darts into the future. Here are just some of them:

  • New materials used to make darts like carbon fiber, graphite and titanium

  • New types of dart shafts like hollow shafts for more weight and speed on the dart board

  • A wide variety of dart flights including open face, closed face, kite style, etc.

  • Darts with different weight ratios which affect how much force is applied to the dart flight when thrown at the board

  • The use of polymers to create new types of darts. These polymers, which can be molded into any shape, are used by professional players to create darts that are more aerodynamic and therefore fly faster.

  • The use of high-tech cameras to determine where a dart landed before it hits its target. This allows professional players to get a better idea of what kind of shot they need to make for maximum accuracy.

Everything around us is fast-forwarding to a customizable experience so it was time that darts would follow.

The newest trends in darts are all about customization and personalization. With the advent of social media, we’re all more aware than ever of how much our lives are reflected in our clothing and accessories. We want to be able to wear what we want, how we want—and that includes our dart sets.

In the future, we’ll probably have a wide variety of customizable options for our darts set. You can choose from a variety of materials (wood, metal), designs (classic, modern), and even add your own personal touches with custom engraving or laser etching.

The wind of change is not only blowing in the direction of technical and manufacturing aspects, but towards the game itself:

The most exciting thing on the horizon is the new technique for "splitting" arrows, which involves shooting them in different directions so that they both hit the dartboard at once. This has led to a whole new category of darts products, including "splitters" that allow you to practice splitting arrows without having to buy two sets of darts.

There is also  "dartball." The object of dartball is to hit numbered targets on the board in order to score points. If you hit a bullseye, you get a bonus point! The game is usually played with three teams of two players each—one person throws the dart while their teammate serves as the "banker." Each team has three turns throwing darts before moving on to another team.

People are also getting more creative with their dart boards. Instead of just having one board, some people are getting multiple boards so they can play against multiple people at once.

Others are getting boards with built-in lights(IgnatGames has an awesome one too, find it here) so the game is easier to see after dark.

Darts are becoming more social events than just games you play alone at home or in your basement (or wherever else). Bars and restaurants around the world are starting up dart leagues where teams compete against each other over several weeks or months until a winner is crowned. .

Wow, we never imagined there is still room for so much innovation and improvement for the amazing game of darts! It really makes you look forward to the future, doesn’t it?

  • Fascinating ideas. In the end, one still has to repeat the process with a clear mind and a calm heart. Maybe you can address next time the mental and psychological elements to this fascinatingly deep sport of darts.

  • Ok, great post & hopefully I’m posting this in the right place, but here goes; I played steel-tip darts back in the 80’s & 90’s in Arkansas, Louisiana & Texas & then stopped after about 15 years. I’ve now retired, moved to central Florida & find there are no dart leagues at least within 25 miles; no leagues, no tournaments, etc. Is there a way to, if not join an online league, to at least participate in ADO or BDO tournaments?

  • I couldn’t find where I could edit my post, but what I meant to add to my question was can you play the tournaments online?

    • Hi Kenneth,
We recommend checking out the GDL Graded Darts League.
“The GDL (Graded Darts League) provides players the opportunity to meet new people and hone their skills while competing against players of similar abilities for prizes, including cash!”
